What is Classic Boat Club by GdV
The Classic Boat Club of Giornale della Vela was created to promote, enhance, explore, celebrate, and narrate all boats, both production and one-off models, that are at least 25 years old from the date of their first launch, built starting from 1967.
Why at least 25 years old
Twenty-five years of age represents the sufficient age to classify a moving object as historic.
This is defined by the charter of FIVA (International Federation of Vintage Vehicles), created to classify and preserve the historical interest of moving objects.
Why Classic Boats
With a minimum of 25 years of age, starting from 1967, we have defined the period in which a used boat can bear the title of historic boat “Classic Boat”.
The term Classic Boat is inspired by the automotive world, which is divided into “vintage cars” at least thirty years old and “classic or historic cars” for those that are at least 20 years old.
Production boats were born in 1967
The choice to use the 1967 limit is because conventionally, that year marks the beginning of large-scale production in boating.
Thanks to the birth of production boats in 1967, new shipyards were established from scratch. These shipyards drew from a new generation of formidable designers, children of the global economic boom. They were courageous and innovative. Many designers of this new generation have become starchitects. The signature counts in determining the value of the object in the world of fashion, furniture, and also cars. And therefore also in the world of boats, especially “Classic Boats”.
The Golden Age of IOR
Alongside the birth of production boats in 1967, there was the debut of the IOR, the offshore racing regulation that influenced the aesthetics and designs of all boats for about 30 years, until the end of the 1990s.
If you walk around any yacht harbor, you’ll find many, many IOR-inspired boats. Boats with slender bows, closed elongated sterns, maximum beams concentrated in the center, large genoas, and small mainsails. In short, unmistakable and often beautiful boats.
For all these reasons and many others that you will discover, the Classic Boat Club and the Official Register of Classic Boats of historical value by GdV were born.
